Planning for the unthinkable

No one wants to consider their own death. The mere thought of it is frightening to many, and it is an inevitability that is almost always best left unspoken of. But the fact remains that, as of today, there is no way to cheat death, no way to beat it. As they say, when it's time to go, it's time to go.

Death can be incredibly stressful to family and friends of a lost loved one. It can be especially troubling if the death is the result of a sudden illness or accident. But illnesses and accidents do happen, at a frequency we often do not want to consider. When it comes to your estate planning however, it is in everyone's best interest for you to consider what you want to do with what you've earned in your life.

When your time is over, don't you want to be assured that all your property, assets, and valuables will go where you want them to go? Some to family, perhaps to friends, perhaps some to various charities of your choosing. Don't you want to sleep well at night knowing that your children will be taken care of if you leave them unexpectedly? And if you do go unexpectedly, don't you want assurance that your grieving family and friends will not have to deal with questions and guesses as to what they think you wanted to do with everything you own?

The easiest way to avoid these unnerving questions is to speak with a law professional familiar with estate planning. A lawyer can help draft documents such as wills, trusts, and living wills. Having professionals work to assure your needs and wishes are met may also help prevent headaches down the road for your loved ones who will not have to deal with estate litigation, asset disputes, probate litigation or court battles upon your death. Isn't that the way you would want it?
